Help Save the Historic 1750 Courthouse

Tuesday, September 30, 5:30-7pm
Historic 1750 Courthouse, 130 Main Street, Smithfield

The Isle of Wight-Smithfield-Windsor Chamber of Commerce presents a fund-raising reception for the urgent restoration of the Historic 1750 Courthouse in the heart of downtown Smithfield.

The event will be held on the Courthouse grounds at 130 Main Street, Smithfield from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm.

This event is open to all and offers an opportunity for area residents and business professionals to network and enjoy good conversation and refreshments from Bon Vivant Wine and Brew.

One of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County's most visible and iconic landmarks, the historic 1750 Courthouse in the heart of downtown Smithfield, is in urgent need of substantial restoration, due to water damage. Historic Smithfield Inc., non-profit conservator of the courthouse, needs to raise nearly $200,000 for damage repair and drainage improvements to protect the classic brick structure. The fund-raising effort is off to a great start, but is far from complete.

The Chamber of Commerce supports this important project, and will hold this fund-raising reception on Tuesday, September 30, 5:30 to 7pm, on the grounds of the courthouse. Beverages and light hors d'oeuvres will be provided. Admission is free, and all are welcome, but we encourage you to come and make a financial donation toward the preservation of this irreplaceable local landmark.

For reservations and additional information click here, contact the Chamber Staff at 357-3502 or e-mail chamber@theisle.org.

Business & Breakfast October 8 on Affordable Health Insurance Plans for Business

As the period of open enrollment for health care exchanges approaches (for coverage starting in 2015, the open enrollment period is November 15, 2014-February 15, 2015), The Hughes Agency and the chamber will present Business & Breakfast on Wednesday, October 8, 8:30am at Sentara St. Luke's Medical Center, 20209 Sentara Way in Carrollton.

Admission is $10 for chamber members, $15 for non-members and includes a continental breakfast.

C. "Danny" Hughes, LUTCF, CEP will outline the Affordable Care Act and its impact on Small Businesses in 2015. In early 2014, many small and medium sized businesses took advantage of an opportunity to postpone their 2014 group health insurance renewals until December 1 of this year. This allowed more time to learn more about the changes in the law. Now that rates for December 1 renewals have been released, more information is available to help employers make informed decisions. Every employer with less than 50 employees is required to become fully compliant with the Affordable Care Act as of December 1, 2014.

For more information or to RSVP, please click here, contact the chamber at (757) 357-3502, or via e-mail.
